DANCE FORMS

Bharatnatyam (Teacher: Rajni Adhikari):

It is the most ancient and most widely practiced dance form, with its roots in Tamil Nadu. Its name is probably derived from the four syllables, Bhava (expression), Raga (music), Tala (rhythm) and Natyam (dramatic element). All the various legends regarding the origin of dance are also related to Bharat  Natyam.

Kathak (Teacher: Neepa Ghosh):

The word Kathak means "to tell a story". It may be traced back to the dance dramas of ancient India. Kathak is believed to have originated in the state of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. It is characterized by rhythmic footwork, scores of ankle bells, spectacular spins, and the dramatic representation of themes from Persian and Urdu poetry alongside those of Hindu mythology. Kathakarose from the fusion of Hindu and Muslim cultures that took place during the Mughal period.
